♦ Art Gallery with Studio Underground ♦

This project is an Art Studio with a Gallery, everything in here is in square shape. The concept of this building focuses on the “Nature”, I’m trying to use this building to explore the relationship between human society and the nature environment. The site is very close to the river, when I took a walk there, the river is the thing that attracted me the most, in an area that surrounded by many skyscrapers in extreme height, the river and the plants give me a sense of relaxation and make me feel that I finally can take a deepp breath. So I decided to combine the feature of the water and the aquatic things with this building.

The studio space is on the basement floor, the space is separated by the glass walls with water screen on them and columns, and there are two inside plazas underground with skylight on the top. The gallery is on the ground floor surrounded by the two pieces of wood bounding walls with a water channel in between.

In the center is the main space of the gallery, there are two square shaped boxes with a glass roof inside and a decorated crossed-shaped roof with hollow in between in order to let the sunlight in. The exterior plaza is a cafe exterior with multiple wavy columns imitating the shape of the plant, like the sea grass or something, you can interpret it as rocks that piles on each other, or tree trunks, or anything you could imagine. (Also the “sea grass” above the ground look like they are growing from the underground water, the columns underground are like their roots.) These two floors are bonded together but in two totally different atmospheres, they kind of balance each other. (You may also interpret the columns on the ground represents natural environment, below the ground represents human modern society.)

The ground level does not have so many things going on, just a gallery and a plaza, gives a sense of lightness and enjoyment on a very busy street, the columns around the gallery help to press and hold the light-weight gallery on the ground, to prevent it from blowing away by the wind.

The basement level has tons of glass walls and columns, people who work on the basement studio is like ants working in their nest, gives a sense of heaviness and massiveness, pretty stressful, but the water screen, the skylight and the transparency of the glass help to reduce the stressfulness that brings by the heavy workload and massive amount of columns and walls.
